ABOUT STACY MCCANN, LCSW
Support, from one mom to another
As a licensed therapist for moms, my job is to support my fellow mothers. But not just any mothers. -I support the moms sacrificing themselves to meet the needs of everyone else. -I support the moms who feel overwhelmed with rage every day at 6pm. -I support the moms that feel invisible in their own homes. -I support the moms that don’t care for themselves because the guilt eats them alive when they do. -I support the moms carrying the weight of the world on their backs.
And I support the moms that don’t have any support at all. Then I teach them to support themselves.
I launched my practice, Present Moment Counseling Services, in August 2022 as a response to the global pandemic. My daughter was just 10 months old when the world shut down, and after seeing moms everywhere crumble under the weight of not only the pandemic but the weight of the entire world, I knew I had to do something. Like many, many other mothers, the pandemic shifted my career and my home life, and I launched my practice in a response to that.
I have expertise in all of these phases but my sweet spot is millennial moms with young children at home. That’s where I really shine, because that’s me!
I have advanced training in:
perinatal mental health from Postpartum Support International
attachment parenting ages 0-6 as a certified Circle of Security facilitator
the mental load and domestic labor as a certified Fair Play Method facilitator
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) from a trauma-informed lens
theraplay and other play therapy techniques, mindfulness and somatic work, and family systems models
In addition to my private therapy practice, I also own Present Parent Coaching Services, where I provide private parent coaching with families worldwide. Parent support was my very first job as as a social worker, and I love that I can come back to my roots with my parenting practice. I support families with attachment-focused coaching in individual sessions or via my parenting intensives.
I’ve been in this field for 15 years, and I’ve worked with families of all shapes and sizes. I’ve supported mothers long before I became one, I’m just better at it now because I live it, and I get it!
Here’s the ancient history:
2004: I received a Bachelor of Communication Studies (focus on marketing and journalism) from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!).
2010: I received a Masters in Social Work from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan
2010: moved from Michigan to just outside St. Louis, in the metro east (Edwardsville, to be specific)
2013: I became licensed as a Clinical Social Worker and a licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst
2013-2022: worked in local non-profits, private clinics, and schools as a child therapist, adult therapist, and parent educator/support
2022: launched Present Moment Counseling Services
2023: launched Present Parent Coaching Services
Here’s the personal:
I’m a millennial mom to a little girl, and our triangle family lives in the metro east, on the Illinois side of St. Louis. I love to travel, garden and preserve what we grow, cook (not Mac and cheese or chicken nuggets, yummy stuff), read, go for walks, drink wine on patios as an outdoor activity, sleep in without a child waking me up, and my goal is to get back to bike-riding…soon (ish).
How I work
At the core of my approach to therapy is a belief that you’re here to feel better now, so that’s where we start, in the present moment.
Yes, the past and the future matter, but we can’t tackle either of those until you can get your grip back on daily life, and feel like you can function with what life throws at you every single day. Only then can we dig deeper to explore how and why your symptoms evolved, and how we can plan for the future.
In sessions with me, we’ll focus on your physical, mental, and emotional well-being; all three must work in tandem to move you forward towards your goals.
